MAX KING CAP

Inspired by Gothic cathedral ceilings, star charts, and astrology, his Celeste series (2009-2014) questions the human need for remaking nature in our image.  Every constellation is a human confection, all astrology wishful meaning-making, as earthbound as the architecture that celebrates otherworldly experience. These paintings on paper are segmented like maps. They reference tarot, holy, and playing cards—that we trade, arrange, and discard in creating sense of human existence.

Though born in Castle Rock, SD while on a family vacation, Max King Cap is from Chicago, where he received his MFA from the University of Chicago. He now lives in Los Angeles where he is working on his doctorate in education at USC.
